List of products by brand Bessererhof
At the Bessererhof Estate in Fiè allo Sciliar, viticulture has been practiced since the late 1950s. At the beginning, it was limited to delivering grapes to private wineries in and around Bolzano. Then, towards the end of the 1980s, we moved on to producing our own wines and selling them to the estate. The harvest of the year 1998 was the first harvest vinified and marketed .....
entirely by Otmar and Rosmarie Mair which make up the fourth generation of winemakers at the Bessererhof Estate. The first varieties, the Pinot Blanc and the Schiava, are still part of the Bessererhof Estate's selection of wines. Currently, the product range includes nine wines.
In 2013, the farm building was renovated under the direction of architect Theodor Gallmetzer. The 2014 collection could be vinified, bottled and stored already in the new building. In 2015 the tasting room with the sales point was added. It is already the fourth and fifth generation of the Mair family that manages the Tenuta Bessererhof in Fiè allo Sciliar together. His son Hannes deals mainly with the growth of grapes and harvest by working in the vineyards, his father Otmar is the head of winemaking and bottling and his mother, Rosmarie, takes care of the administrative aspects and the sale of wines.
At the moment, a total of 40,000 to 50,000 bottles of different red and white wines are bottled at the estate. The assortment consists of nine wines and includes the following varieties: Pinot Blanc, Yellow Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Kerner, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Schiava and Zweigelt ("Roan").
The Bessererhof estate is the southernmost estate in the Isarco Valley. It is located at the foot of the Sciliar plateau in the Dolomites. The vineyards are located on an altitude between 350m immediately below the estate itself and 900m in Tiso in the Val di Funes. The soils of the different layers make wines that convince thanks to their mineral notes. Wines of a unique character are difficult to compare. The position of the Bessererhof estate between the fresh currents of the Isarco Valley and the warmth of the Bolzano basin favors the ideal thermal change between day and night. This makes the red and white wines particularly intense and fruitful. In addition, the rainfall is low compared to other similar areas in the Alps and the hours of sunshine are many.
The Mair family decided to devote themselves to natural viticulture. This means that you renounce mainly the use of herbicides and fertilizers, the grass can grow more than in conventional crops and for each variety the right position is chosen. The important parameters for choice are the slope of the land, the sun exposure and the different altitudes. To ensure constant quality, already two thirds of the vineyards have been equipped with special nets to protect the grapes against hail, birds and wasps.
Much of the work in the vineyards is intense work done by hand, because the sloping land almost completely excludes the use of agricultural machinery. This is proof of the great passion for wine and the enormous commitment of the whole Mair family.
