The grapes come from vineyards which are about 17-18 years old, situated about 400metres up, between the hills of Spello and Assisi. The soil is generally a medium mixture, tending towards sandy, somewhat shallow, with high porosity and permeability. This is due to the alteration of the sandstone of marine origin which constitutes the parent rock. Harvesting began with Merlot, during the first days of September, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Vinification: once they are harvested, the grapes are immediately transported to the winery, where they are destemmed, then put in thermal-conditioned, stainless steel tanks to ferment. Maceration time is approximately 10 days, with frequent pumping and delestage. The wine is then transferred to barriques of French oak (capacity 228 litres), where malolactic fermentation takes place, and where the wine is left to mature for about 12 months. Finally, the wine is bottled and allowed to age for a further 24 months.
Tasting notes: intense deep red in colour, with an evolved bouquet reminiscent of blackberry compote, tobacco, spices, liquorice and chocolate.
It is sumptuous and elegant to the palate, with perfectly balanced silky tannins, which give a rich, long finish.
A brief history: the first vintage produced of Villa Fidelia Rosso was in 1990.
In 1998, Riccardo Cotarella started collaborating with us, and made important modifications to the way the vineyards were run, to the process of vinification and to the blend of grapes. In so doing, Villa Fidelia Rosso began to take on the precise characteristics which it maintains to this day.
The name Villa Fidelia® comes from a monumental villa of the 1800s, situated about 500 metres from the winery, and which represents the town of Spello from a historical and cultural perspective.
