Vigna Tonda Trebbiano Spoletino – Antonelli
Vigna Tonda Trebbiano Spoletino Antonelli is an organic skin-contact white wine made exclusively from grapes grown in the winery’s distinctive circular vineyard. Spontaneous fermentation, extended skin maceration and ageing in terracotta and ceramic amphoras create an authentic, complex Trebbiano Spoletino with excellent ageing potential.
This prestigious single-vineyard wine is the result of Antonelli’s rediscovery of Trebbiano Spoletino, an ancient native grape variety once widely cultivated on the hills between Montefalco, Spoleto and Trevi before being largely forgotten.
Vigna Tonda Trebbiano Spoletino Antonelli: a circular single vineyard
Vigna Tonda Trebbiano Spoletino Antonelli is produced exclusively from grapes grown in the “Vigna Tonda”, a vineyard already depicted on the estate’s first map, dating back to 1902.
Antonelli decided to replant it following the original historical design and recreating its distinctive circular shape. The vineyard therefore represents a tangible connection between the estate’s history and a contemporary approach to viticulture.
First produced in 2013, Vigna Tonda offers a perspective on Trebbiano Spoletino that is both innovative and rooted in tradition.
Massal selection from old vines trained around maple trees
The wine is made from 100% Trebbiano Spoletino, using the winery’s own massal selection obtained from the finest old vines traditionally trained around field maple trees.
This historic training method used trees as natural supports for the vines and was once widespread throughout the Umbrian countryside. Massal selection helps preserve the biodiversity and genetic heritage of the old Trebbiano Spoletino vines.
The vineyard is located on a hillside at approximately 350 metres above sea level, with western exposure and Guyot training. Organic farming encourages a respectful and balanced relationship with the soil and surrounding environment.
Manual harvesting and spontaneous fermentation
The harvest generally takes place during the first half of October. The grapes are picked entirely by hand to preserve their integrity and select the finest bunches.
Fermentation begins spontaneously through the yeasts naturally present on the grapes and takes place without temperature control. This approach allows the wine to develop naturally, following the spontaneous course of fermentation.
The must remains in contact with the skins for an extended period in ceramic vessels. This long maceration extracts aromas, colour, structure and a delicate tannic component.
Vinification and ageing in amphora
After separation from the skins, the wine remains for several months in terracotta and ceramic amphoras.
These vessels encourage a slow and gentle evolution without introducing external flavours. This preserves the character of Trebbiano Spoletino, the identity of the vineyard and the natural complexity developed during maceration.
The use of amphora revives ancient winemaking techniques through a modern and thoughtful approach, creating an original, organic wine with a distinctive sense of place.
Style and characteristics
Vigna Tonda is an intense and complex skin-contact white wine. Extended contact with the skins provides greater structure, depth and texture than a conventionally vinified white wine.
On the palate, it is dry, textured and persistent, supported by the natural freshness of Trebbiano Spoletino and a delicate tannic structure.
Amphora vinification and the grape variety’s natural ability to mature over time make this a wine with excellent bottle-ageing potential, capable of developing further complexity over the years.
Food pairings
The structure of Vigna Tonda Trebbiano Spoletino Antonelli makes it an excellent partner for:
- richly flavoured pasta dishes;
- baked or grilled fish;
- white meats;
- grilled vegetables;
- spicy dishes;
- medium-aged and mature cheeses.
Serve at a temperature of 14 °C, preferably in a large wine glass that allows its aromas to develop fully.

One hundred seventy-five hectares (430 acres) in a single estate set in the heart of the Montefalco DOCG area. The plots, clayey and rich in limestone, have various geological origins: some are deep, while others are rocky, thereby providing intense and varied nuances to the wines. The hills are pristine, surrounded by wooded areas and have an ideal microclimate for vines and olive trees. Ten hectares (24 acres) are dedicated to olive groves, while 50 (123 acres) are covered by vineyards; these crops are located on the hilltops, with southern and western exposure. We cultivate mainly native varietals: Grechetto and Trebbiano Spoletino for the whites, while the red varietals are mainly Sangiovese and Sagrantino.
At the heart of the property, just below the original manor house, is the Winery; the cellars are completely underground and designed for gravity vinification, with the pressed grapes falling down into the fermentation tanks and the pomace discarded without pumps, simply using the force of gravity.
