If Tabarrini wines are considered extreme, this label is even more so! A product of deep clay and a magnificent southern exposure, this wine is made from grapes of exceptional maturity. The resulting wine is aged in French oak casks and refined for many months in the bottle, and is not marketed until 5 years after harvest. A muscular and powerful red, incredibly complex, huge, with superb tannins and longevity.
A DOCG classified wine made from 100% Sagrantino grapes harvested from the premier vineyard of the Tabarrini estate, Colle alle Macchie. This vineyard sits some 420 meters above sea level and enjoys South, South-East exposure. Beyond elevation and exposure, Colle alle Macchie is distinct from the other two vineyards in its micro climate and soil composition. The latter is comprised of clay-lime with a cobblestone presence. The wine is intense, dry and offers complex aromas and tastes. This is a wine produced with the best of cellars in mind and will compare favorably with the finest offerings of California, Italy or France. Colle alle Macchie is produced in extremely limited quantities (fewer than 4,000 bottles per year!) and allocated to Tabarrini’s most aficionados.
For four full generations, in their corner of Umbria just outside Montefalco, the Tabarrini family have lovingly and passionately tended their vines, producing distinctive wines. Towards the end of the 1990’s, however, thanks to the foresight and enthusiasm of the present proprietor, Giampaolo, the company changed direction, deciding to bottle their own wines and to put all their years of experience to the best possible use. Shortly after this, the new “cantina” building took shape, nestling in the evocative, rolling landscape that is so typically Umbrian, inspiring harmony between Nature and Man. Half of the vineyard (11 hectares out of a total of 22), is dedicated to the Sagrantino grape, which has found its true “raison d’être” here in Umbria and plays a central role in the work and the lives of everybody involved; fascinating and irreplaceable. But great wines grow only from a great love of the land. From the bunch to the bottle. The whole family follows this philosophy scrupulously and passionately through every step in the production of their wines.
